Gardenscapes

Gardenscapes is one of those games that kinda took over my life without me noticing. I downloaded it back in 2019 “just to try lah” and now its 2026 and Austin the butler is basically part of my family. If you ever told yourself “one more level” at midnight and then suddenly its 2am, you know exactly what im talking about.

Nearly ten years after launch, this game is still one of the most played puzzle games in Malaysia. Which is honestly kinda gila when you think about it. But alot of my friends quit halfway — usually at the hard levels, when the game stops being cute and starts being mean. I almost quit too, no joke. So this guide is basically everything I wish someone told me earlier.

What Is Gardenscapes and Why Malaysians Keep Playing It

Ok quick backstory. Gardenscapes is a free match-3 puzzle game by Playrix, came out on mobile in 2016. You inherit this huge run-down garden from your grandfather (conveniently rich one, this grandfather) and Austin the butler helps you fix everything up. Every level you win gives you stars, and stars is what you spend on renovations — cleaning fountains, planting flowers, building benches, all that.

What makes it different from the other thousand match-3 games out there? The story, honestly. Most puzzle games just give you a board and a score and wish you good luck. Gardenscapes actually gives you a reason to keep going. New characters keep showing up, the dialogue is actually funny sometimes, and every restored area unlocks new stuff to poke around. I think thats why it still holds a 4.8 rating on Google Play with more than 13 million reviews. For a game this old, that number is walao level.

Also worth mentioning — it runs fine on old phones. I played on a budget Redmi for years, never lagged once. The main levels also work offline, which saved me alot of times when my data habis halfway through the month. Events and team stuff need internet though.

How to Play Gardenscapes (Step by Step)

If you’re new, dont panic. The game holds your hand for the first few levels anyway. Here’s the flow in simple english:

Step 1: Learn the board. Swap two fruits side by side to line up three or more of the same kind. Match four or more and you get power-ups — bombs, rockets, dynamite. These are your best friends, remember them ok.

Step 2: Read the goal before you move. I cannot stress this enough seriously. Every level wants something different. Collect certain fruits, clear the grass, break the ice, whatever. My early mistake was just matching whatever looked nice, then wondering why I failed with two moves left. Read the goal first lah!

Step 3: Win stars, fix the garden. Each level you clear gives one star. Stars pay for garden tasks, garden tasks push the story, and the story unlocks new areas. Simple.

Step 4: Respect the lives system. You get five lives. Every failed level eats one, and they refill slowly. When you run out, go make a Milo or tapau lunch. The game will still be there when you come back, confirm.

Step 5: Join a team ASAP. Teams share lives and you can join events together. Playing solo is just making the game harder for yourself, trust me on this one.

Gardenscapes Level Types: I Tracked My Own Rewards (Real Data)

This is something the game never explains properly, so I kept notes during my own play sessions for a few weeks. Here’s what each level type actually gives you in 2026:

Level Type Coins Stars What Its Really Like
Normal 10 1 Breezy, usually done first try
Hard 100 1 A few retries, need proper power-up timing
Super Hard 150 1 Genuinely tough, dont attempt when sleepy
One Shot / Challenge 150 3 One chance only. Fail and its gone forever

See the problem? Normal levels only pay 10 coins now. Used to be 50, but Playrix nerfed it in late 2024 (why Playrix, why). So the smart move is saving your boosters for Hard and Super Hard stages, where the payout is ten to fifteen times more. And about those One Shot levels — please dont attempt one right after waking up. I lost a 3-star challenge at 7am once and thought about it the whole day at work. Sien.

My Best Gardenscapes Tips for Beating Hard Levels

Right, the part you actually came for. Hard levels is where most people give up. I nearly did too, somewhere around level 300-something. These habits made the difference for me:

Always work from the bottom of the board. Matches near the bottom cause the fruits above to drop, and drops often trigger chain reactions by themselves. Free matches means free progress. In a game where every move counts, this alone saves you so many retries, confirm.

Dont fire power-ups too early. A rocket on a half-empty board does almost nothing. Wait until the board is packed. Better yet, combine two power-ups — rocket plus bomb is my personal favourite. And the Rainbow Blast you get from matching five in a row? Save it. It clears every fruit of one colour, so its most valuable at the end when only one goal is left.

Restart early if the board looks bad. If your first few moves give you nothing useful, just quit the level and take the life loss. You save time and frustration that way. Sunk cost is real in this game, dont fall for it like I did.

Actually play the events lah. Expeditions, seasonal events, team challenges — they give out free boosters, coins and lives. I used to ignore them completely, then realised I was spending way more coins buying extra moves than my friends who just… played the events. Free stuff is free stuff, take it.

So Is Gardenscapes Still Worth Playing in 2026?

Short answer, yes. Longer answer, yes and the numbers back me up.

The game crossed 20,000 levels recently — I couldnt believe it either when I checked — and Playrix still adds around 50 new levels every single week. Version 9.9.0 rolled out not long ago, and theres a new event called Polar Station Mystery this October, where you help a character named Rachel find out what happened to some scientists trapped in ice. Looks quite fun actually, looking forward to it.

One Reddit user said:

“Whenever I see stuff like this, my question is always: why? Those coins and power ups are useless for anything except game play, so why hoard them? Like: what’s the end goal here?”

One heads-up though. The old Facebook version of the game is gone. Retired, finished, habis. If you used to play through Facebook like my aunty did, sorry lah, the mobile app is your home now. Good news is your progress syncs to your account, so changing phones is not painful one.

And yes, the game is still free to download, with in-app purchases obviously. My stance never changed: you can beat every level without paying if you’re patient with events and boosters. Treat purchases as a shortcut, never a requirement. One more honest note — the ads for this game were famous for showing fake “pull the pin” gameplay that isnt the real game at all. The UK ad regulator actually banned some of those back in 2020. The real game is match-3, always was. Dont get tricked.

FAQs

The main match-3 levels work offline after your first download. Events, teams and progress sync need internet.

  • How many levels does Gardenscapes have in 2026?

Over 20,000, with about 50 new levels added weekly. Nobody can actually finish this game one.
